Broad Peak (8,047 meters), the 12th highest mountain in the world, stands proudly next to K2 and the Gasherbrum peaks in the Baltoro region of the Karakoram range, Pakistan. This expedition is organized by K2 Expedition & Trekking, a local tour operator that has been managing successful mountaineering journeys in the Karakoram since 2012.
The Broad Peak Expedition is a challenging yet rewarding adventure. Located at the heart of the Karakoram range, Broad Peak, known locally as “Falchan Kangri,” offers mountaineers a chance to climb one of the world’s top 8000m peaks. The expedition is physically and mentally demanding, requiring high-level climbing and mountaineering skills. Prior experience on 6,800-meter peaks is recommended for those aiming to summit.
Broad Peak’s name comes from its vast, wide summit ridge. Standing alongside K2, it dominates the landscape of the Baltoro Glacier. With over a decade of local expertise, K2 Expedition & Trekking ensures a well-supported and safe journey, offering both full-board logistics and customized plans to suit climbers’ experience levels, available time, and weather conditions.
The expedition begins at Islamabad International Airport, where a representative from K2 Expedition & Trekking will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. After an initial briefing, you will take a spectacular 45-minute flight to Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram. Here, you will have the chance to glimpse Nanga Parbat, K2, and other stunning peaks.
Skardu, the capital of Baltistan, is a hub for trekkers and climbers, where you can complete any final preparations before setting off. From Skardu, you will journey by jeep along the Indus, Shigar, and Braldu rivers to reach Askole, the last village before entering the wilderness of the Karakoram.
The adventure begins with a trek from Askole, passing through Braldu Gorge and along the Baltoro Glacier, one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions. The journey will take you through some of the most stunning and dramatic mountain landscapes, leading to Concordia, often called the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods,” where you’ll get the first views of Broad Peak.
Your expedition team, including mountain guides, chefs, and support staff, will remain at Base Camp for the entire duration of the climb. The route typically involves setting up multiple camps:
The ascent, though not extremely steep, is challenging due to its remoteness and altitude. After reaching the summit, the return follows the same path back to Islamabad, where the expedition concludes.
K2 Expedition & Trekking is a trusted name, known for its local expertise and deep-rooted connections within the Baltistan region. Since 2012, we have been hosting mountaineering expeditions and treks, ensuring a safe, authentic, and culturally enriching experience for adventurers from around the world.
The first successful ascent of Broad Peak was made on June 9, 1957, by an Austrian team led by Marcus Schmuck. The climbers—Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl—achieved the summit without supplemental oxygen or the aid of high-altitude porters, marking a significant achievement in mountaineering history.
Several notable climbs have occurred on Broad Peak, including:
Whether this is your first 8000m peak or another addition to your mountaineering portfolio, Broad Peak offers a unique blend of beauty, challenge, and cultural immersion. With over 12 years of local experience, K2 Expedition & Trekking ensures your expedition is handled with the utmost professionalism, safety, and respect for the environment and local communities.
Pakistan, spanning about 880,000 square kilometers, is a land of contrasts—stretching from the Arabian Sea to the towering peaks of the Karakoram and Himalayas in Gilgit Baltistan. This region, where the Karakoram, Hindukush, and Himalayas converge, is home to five of the world’s highest peaks: K2 (8,611m), Nanga Parbat (8,126m), Gasherbrum I (8,080m), Broad Peak (8,047m), and Gasherbrum II (8,035m). Gilgit Baltistan also boasts the largest glaciers outside the polar regions, offering unparalleled opportunities for mountain climbing.
Whether you’re looking to climb a peak for the first time or are a seasoned mountaineer, Pakistan provides limitless options. Our team has been organizing expeditions in the Karakoram for over 40 years and can help plan your Broad Peak climb. Simply let us know your preferred peak and season, and we’ll handle the rest.
Climbing permits are required for peaks above 6,500 meters, and certain areas, like the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP), also require trekking permits. We handle the entire permit process, allowing you to focus on the climb.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Council sets the official royalty fees for each climbing season. Fees vary based on the mountain, trekking, and waste management requirements. Permit fees are non-refundable once paid to the government. Contact us for details.
We’ll assist with all the necessary arrangements for government clearance and permits. It’s advisable to apply at least three months in advance, as the process may take longer than expected.
A US$10,000 helicopter rescue bond, obtained through Askari Aviation, is required for each expedition. If not used, the bond will be refunded minus administrative charges.
A Liaison Officer (LO) is assigned to every expedition above 6,500 meters. Expeditions cover the LO’s food, accommodation, and transportation. We arrange the necessary logistics, including daily allowances, gear, and support staff.
Expeditions must commit to leaving the mountains clean. A waste management fee is charged to ensure proper environmental practices. Failure to comply can result in fines.
We handle the clearance and storage of expedition cargo. Non-consumable items are duty-free if re-exported. Consumable items are duty-free if used during the expedition. We also rent and sell essential climbing gear.
Our kitchen crew will take care of your team at Broad Peak Base Camp, with experienced high-altitude porters available upon request. Staffing levels vary based on team size.
If you cancel or postpone your expedition, the royalty fee is forfeited. However, service-related costs may be refunded according to our Terms & Conditions.

Our vehicles will be ready for us in Askoli, and we’ll begin an early drive back to Skardu. Crossing the Braldu River via a suspension bridge, we’ll follow the remarkable road carved through the Braldu Gorge. Due to landslides, the road may occasionally be blocked, requiring a change of vehicles. If this happens, some porters will help transfer our bags while we walk across any affected areas. Once we exit the gorge, the road improves, leading us through the fertile Shigar Valley to its meeting point with the Indus River. From there, it’s a smoother and faster journey on paved roads following the great Indus River into Skardu. Upon arrival, we’ll check into our hotel, with time for a refreshing shower and relaxation before dinner. Tonight, we’ll enjoy the comfort of a real bed.
Accommodation: Summit Hotel or similar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
If weather permits, we’ll head to Skardu Airport, a 40-minute drive from the hotel along a scenic road lined with poplar trees. Boarding our flight, we’ll enjoy a stunning journey out of the valley, passing by Nanga Parbat before heading south to Islamabad. Arriving back in the bustling capital feels like a contrast after time spent in the serene mountains, and it may take a moment to adjust. Our private bus will be waiting to take us to our group hotel. After settling in, we’ll have lunch (unless there are delays). The rest of the day will be free for independent exploration or relaxation at the hotel. Your guide can suggest sightseeing options, and shopping for hand-made rugs is a popular activity. In the evening, we’ll gather for a celebratory meal at the hotel or a local restaurant.
In case of flight cancellation, we’ll drive down the Karakoram Highway and reach Chillas/Naran by afternoon.
Accommodation: Hill View Hotel or similar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
If we end up driving down the Karakoram Highway, we’ll arrive in Islamabad by late afternoon. If we manage to fly the previous day, today will be spent sightseeing in Islamabad. Skardu is a weather-dependent airport, meaning flights operate only when visibility allows the pilot to see the runway clearly. While weather conditions in the Karakoram are usually favorable, occasional clouds or rain can lead to delays. If needed, we’ll travel down to Islamabad by road, following the stunning Karakoram Highway, which takes two days. This contingency day allows us to plan for such situations. If we fly directly to Islamabad, today will be spent exploring the capital, and your guide will provide options for activities.
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Islamabad International Airport for your return flight. This marks the end of the “Broad Peak Expedition.”

Our expedition package includes assistance with permits, airport transfers, hotel accommodations, meals during the trek and at Base Camp, camping gear, and support from guides, cooks, and porters. It does not cover international flights, visas, personal insurance, or personal climbing equipment.
Altitude sickness is a risk during any high-altitude climb. Our itinerary allows for gradual acclimatization, and our guides are trained to recognize and manage symptoms. In severe cases, we prioritize descent to lower altitudes and arrange for emergency evacuation if necessary.
Proper acclimatization is key to a successful expedition. We design the itinerary with rest days to help your body adjust to the high altitude. Prepare for varying weather conditions, from hot temperatures at lower altitudes to extreme cold, wind, and snow at higher elevations.
Yes, comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and mountaineering is mandatory. Your policy should include coverage for emergency evacuations, including helicopter rescues.
Broad Peak is considered one of the more accessible 8000m peaks, but it is still a challenging climb. Climbers should have prior experience on high-altitude peaks (6,000m or above) and be comfortable with ice and snow climbing. Physical fitness and mental endurance are essential.
Yes, prior high-altitude climbing experience is recommended. We advise having climbed peaks of at least 6,500m before attempting Broad Peak. Technical climbing skills and familiarity with using ice axes, crampons, and ropes are also necessary.
Climbing permits are required for Broad Peak, as well as trekking permits for entering the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP). Our team will handle all the necessary permits on your behalf.
The journey begins in Islamabad, with a flight to Skardu. From Skardu, you will travel by jeep to Askole, the last village before the Karakoram wilderness. From Askole, the trek to Broad Peak Base Camp follows the Baltoro Glacier, passing through iconic landscapes like Concordia.
Broad Peak Base Camp is situated at an altitude of approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet).
Typically, three camps are set up above Base Camp: Camp I (6,000m): Reached by climbing a rock gully. Camp II (6,400m): Situated on a large snow face. Camp III (7,400m): The final camp before the summit attempt.
Our team will provide comprehensive support, including local guides, high-altitude porters, cooks, and Base Camp staff. We also offer full-board logistics, including tents, food, and cooking equipment.
We recommend a rigorous fitness training regimen that includes cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and endurance activities. Climbing-specific training, including practice with crampons and ice axes, is also advised.
A detailed equipment list will be provided before your trip. Essential gear includes climbing boots, crampons, ice axes, a helmet, harness, warm clothing, and personal items like sleeping bags and backpacks. We can assist with renting or purchasing gear if needed.
Yes, experienced high-altitude porters are available upon request to assist with carrying equipment and supplies beyond Base Camp.
Safety is our top priority. We carry essential medical supplies, communication devices, and emergency oxygen. We also arrange a helicopter rescue bond in case of serious emergencies, ensuring swift evacuation if needed.
The best time to climb Broad Peak is during the summer months, from June to August. These months offer more stable weather conditions, making it easier and safer to attempt the climb.
